MARS + NEPTUNE
Each of these planetary archetypes have the gift of multivalence. This means that each of the archetypes have a rich variety of meaning and the ability to express both light and shadow through the archetypal realm.
Mars is the archetype of action and the will. It is what impels us forward with force and is what gives us courage and physical energy. Mars is the quintessential warrior and under its domain is also aggression, fighting, and conflict. Mars is assertive and forceful and rules the physical body. Mars is what it is to be in action. Mars is personified in the god of war.
The Neptune archetype is nearly the exact opposite of Mars with its own multivalent expressions. Neptune embodies all that is spiritual, divine, and transcendent. It is the ideal reality and rules the imagination and our dreams. It can also be the illusions we use to escape and the pollyanna nightmare that comes about with seeing the world with rose colored glasses on. It is the imaginative and symbolic dimension of life. When we dream, use our imagination or experience illusion it is the work of Neptune at play.
Together these two archetypes make quite a complex. It can be the illusion (Neptune) of strength or courage (Mars), the glamorized (Neptune) hero (Mars), or fighting (Mars) for an ideal (Neptune). It can also take the form of action or even anger that knows no bounds or the dissolving of anger and action all together. It can create a diffused or unclear direction. Mars-Neptune can be a spiritual warrior, an inspired artist, or an action taken under an illusion. The power of making ideals express themselves through the human will. It can also be our strength in our own imagination or the physicality of our spiritual practice. There are a multitude of other ways in which this archetypal combination can express itself, these are just a few of the ways in which they relate to one another.
Divination itself is an expression of the Mars-Neptune archetypal complex. Divine, coming from its Latin root, means proceeding from of coming from god, the cosmos, or the universe. Ation as a suffix is used primarily to be a process or action. Therefore Divination means the process or action of having something flow from the universe. It is the practice and process that we use to make this connection happen. Divination used in this way is not referring to prophecy, fortune telling, or augury, rather a divination that opens communication with the cosmos. A street that goes both ways. Divination is the process of connecting to and participating with the cosmos.
Our place within the universe is a relational one and all forms of relationships require some form of communication. The form of communication with the cosmos that I have most gravitated toward is through Divination. This can be seen as similar to what prayer is; seeking wisdom and knowledge from the universe on what direction to go in, what decision to make, and what action to take.
It is through the archetypal symbol systems and practices of the Tarot, ‘Blake’ dipping, and the I Ching––all with an undercurrent of an astrological point of view––that I have found Divination to be most useful, in not only my life, but also in the lives of others around me. These means of communication require me to expand upon my own imagination as well as requiring an action of my will from me. It is a perfect combination of the transcendent realm and my own will in action––to put it in the form of the archetypes––and the perfect combination of Neptune and Mars.
I do not live in a fatalistic or deterministic universe, rather one that allows, maybe even requires, me to co-create with it and in relationship to it. There is an importance of owning ones own fate and destiny through ones own agency.
This is not divination in the sense that something in the stars or in the cards is simply going to be handed to you as fate. Divination is requiring an action after the communication between the human, inner psyche, and the universe, outer cosmos, has happened. Therefore the Martian energy of the will must aim to align itself with the Neptunian transcendent will and together create what is to come next. And at the same time the Neptunian realm will be influenced by the action that is taken by the autonomous will.
There is strength in receptivity. This receptivity, sensitivity, compassion, and imagination is a real strength of the Mars-Neptune archetypal combination. Being grounded in the imagination leaves one open enough to be receptive of what is needed to be taken in or communicated from the cosmos. It is with this knowledge that comes in from the Neptunian realm that the Mars can act with. This action can be taken through the arts, through writing, through dialogue with the Divine, through mediation, and an infinite variety of other means and ways of asserting the will of the imagination. The key is that this receptivity is an action in itself, it is something to be practiced. Once this is taking place, than one can act in life in accordance with what they have found in their receptivity.
